I didn't get to this during the rating period but it would have been top marks across the board!  The restore points were spaced well, the difficulty ramp was pretty smooth, you had all the options and rebindable controls, controller support; I don't think there is way to have made this better in the time we had.

This is a surprisingly solid little metroidvania, given the jam constraints. Congratulations, I had a lot of fun playing it!

So fun. Loved the level design, character design. Energy as a resource was a nice mechanic. And also really nice to add an option to ignore it to make the game less challenging for folks.

A cute, charming, and beautifully-drawn platformer. Also really difficult! I noticed that you can abuse the "energy recharges between rooms" feature the same way that you can in Celeste, and the similarities between the two don't stop there. I didn't make it all the way through this one, but I'll come back tomorrow and give it another try.

Hello,

First I will start by saying that I'm not that into puzzle games, but this is so good!

The art is good, the storytelling is great, and the mechanics are very very well implemented.

Congrats on the submission, this is one of the better and most solid games I've played on this jam!

Nice visuals and clean controls. Really nice storytelling throughout and especially the ending. I thought you did a nice job on the game!

I love the hamster knight! And using the actions as energy is a really interesting and unique idea! I definitely got stuck in the double jump room, but overall super solid entry great job!

Fun an clever game, got stuck once my first time but overall great experience, really love the level design,  the art and music, the level of polish on this is amazing, congrats guys

Awesome! Great concept! The sound design was on point, I especially liked how each piece built up over the course of the game. There were a couple game breaking bugs but I'm sure they could be ironed out if you guys work on this more. Also, I think the fixed resolution caused issues with the game not showing up on some devices.

Hi melo_toni! Sound person here, thanks for the compliment <3  I'm still learning to work with adaptive audio in games and can't wait to experiment more within the engine with Godot 4.3! Thanks for the feedback!

I love platformers and this one is excellent. I thought the energy mechanic led to some really tricky and challenging puzzles, but I enjoyed them throughout. There is a ton of polish here, from the art to the music to the gameplay - you guys did very, very well. One of my favorites from the jam.

Thankyou renoceros for the extremely kind words and closing pun. We also enjoyed it a lot. We've learned a lot from this experience on so many levels and are eager to see what we can do in the future <3

Any hints to continue? :-)

Developer (1 edit) (+2)

Hi there! Thanks for playing and sharing your feedback <3 we really appreciate it.
I believe the puzzle below has two major ways to solve:
1)  Drop down left, dash left (2 stamina) and mid-air jump (2 stamina) left onto the next platform
2) Drop and glide left (1 stamina) as much as possible and mid-air jump (2 stamina) to reach the platform.

If you ever do find yourself stuck again: one of our artists performed and recorded a playthrough of the entire game

Good and polished platfomer mechanics! I played it for some time until I got the gliding and some more. Was really a fun run. There was one point I could find no way to continue without dying again and again. I'll try it later again. :-)

Really great game, a clever and frustrating mechanic with the energy.  It did walk the fine line between challenging and frustrating for me, but I might just have a lack of patience.  The energy reset on changing screens opened up some good opportunities for clever puzzle solutions which forced some headscratching.  I did think some of the solutions were a little finickity like where you have to graze the ear of the totem to get full energy for the rest of the puzzle.  Major points as well for using an element of adaptive music, it worked really well. Overall it was really well implemented and made given the time period.  Congrats.

Music and sfx person here. Thanks for the compliment ^^ - I'm trying to expand my ability to use music dynamically in games!
As for the difficulty - yes, there is a fine line there. We did discuss the payoff between challenge and reward a lot and decided it might not be as fun for everyone with the standard mechanics, so we added an "easy mode" option in the settings to play without the stamina restraint.
We have learned so much about the game/level design from watching people play the game and providing us with feedback. Game design is hard but extremely rewarding.

<3 thanks on behalf of the Hamsterwell team

It's tricky with the difficulty issue, I think you have to go with your instinct and add accessibility where you feel necessary to allow everyone to enjoy it, but it will be hard to satisfy all types of players ultimately.  I think you got balance right.

Developer

I agree. That we definitely knew upfront, this wasn't going to be a game for everyone. Another idea that we discussed to encourage less avid platformer players was to interject more story elements into the game. I myself am always driven by a greater sense of narrative and discovery, which I think we tried hinting at, but our team did not cover a role for writing and storyboarding. Perhaps for a later, updated version!

Very excellent game. Great graphics/sound/music/controls. Difficulty was hard but not too hard, although the one spot where you had to jump, reset, then double jump was very tough.

Only minor complaint was the theme seemed a little stretched, but  overall think this is the best one I have so far.

Thanks for submitted very impressive for only being second submission, nice teamwork.

Cool game but I got softlocked a few times in desert zone and overall it felt different. Also I didn't understand if I win because I got last coin in the first zone though I probably wasn't supposed to, so I should have missed one coin somewhere in the well. And the weel goes deeper. Way deeper.

I'm very sane, you mind me!

Really inventive platformer, loved everything about this game. Minor gripe got stuck on one of the tutorial level sections like the commenter below, and wouldn't have been able to work it out without the video play through.

The dash is so cute. My wife was watching me play and enjoyed it too!

Amazing game! The energy system is really challeging, I've just had some problems with jumps, but overall the controls are good :)

Graphics and music are also wonderful, congratulations to all the team!

Developer

Thanks Rick (Zinho)!
The artists did such an amazing job on all the visuals. I can't fathom how fast they were able to create all this content.
Kudos to the programmer for enabling us all to work together so well.

The game looks good, I liked the assets in your game, did you draw it by yourself?

Developer(+2)

I’m glad you liked it! Yep we did all the assets by ourselves, both art and sound. Thank you so much <3
