Cool game, though maybe I missed something. Was there an incentive to move around at all? Like it seemed like I could have camped somewhere since I had nothing to try to go after.
I liked how simple the controls were!
hmm, I would say you missed something. We totally prefer in-game tutorials, but as time was short we included the game rules, controls and the goal in the description, on the game site.
In general, you are correct and we wanted to display an arrow or something else pointing to the goal. We ran out of time.
But, tbh: Your critique holds up for a lot of games. Do I have an incentive to move in a pokemon game? Not really, unless I want to beat the game.
Curious: how long were you playing? When I watched our game being streamed, the streamer consulted the game page after a few seconds to resolve the issues you had and gave it another shot. I feel like we lost you very early on.
I love your youtube tutorials btw!
My mistake. At first when I opened the game it looked like I could just kind of walk around aimlessly forever (it wasn't clear that there was a goal/ where I was supposed to go, I missed that line in the description). As you said, adding an arrow would have helped a lot.
I have now beaten the game (apples :-) )
It was also a bit hard to tell what counted as walls since they were only a few pixels big, maybe the thickness could have been a bit more? I'll update my rating :)
Glad you like my tutorials ;-)
Genius take on the theme, the whole style reminded me of late 2000's flash games. Easy enough to avoid being spotted by just taking a moment to watch the movement pattern. But when I was seen the chase music was perfect. I do appreciate the little silence that occurs just before a chase happens, was a great and forgiving way to inform the player that they need to move away before they get chased.
Fantastic work!
Thanks. We really care about a non-obvious but spot-on adherance to the theme, in all our jams. Seeing that so many people appreciated that feels awesome!
Cute like a kumquat. I liked the music, but by the end I had been selfied like 5 times and I was beginning to hate it. The take on the theme was funny.
Well it is a horror game after all. Thank you for playing!
*googles kumquat*
I liked the way you did the eyesight for the stealth mechanics. Good graphics and controls, overall a fun game. Nice one!
This was a super original take on the theme "Haunted", 5 starfruits for originality!
The concept was bananas! It reminded me a lot of those childhood games I used to play when I was a kid.
That plot-twist in the end was so good. I don't think anyone could have FIGured it out.
Regardless, the player was a bit tossed into a chaotic place and it was a bit hard to figure out what areas are walkable and what weren't.
I got spotted quite a few times and near the end I just had a hoard following me, but I could easily outrun them. Either way good job on completing your entry!
yeah sorry about that. QoL/tutorial stuff was re-prioritized when we realized we were running out of time.
thank for trying it out and enjoy that tasty fig of yours
Good game. fun playing.
What's the name of the main character? Did I miss it? Walter Melon perhaps? Danny Durian?
Needed a touch more polish, but there was undeniable charm. The funky fresh music, into the high stakes chase song was great. Unconventional, but cool take on the theme. Good job!
Orange you glad you joined the jam? I enjoyed the different approach to the theme! A stealth game is also something I haven't seen yet this jam. Excellent work on the audio cues for being seen.
I did find a few points where I could actually escape the tiles and free roam the grey void. One was near the beginning area with the fans and the other was down near the green, ribbed tiles. I have a video of the areas if you end up needing it.
That was bananas! a original take on the theme. The stealth is a neat idea. However, I would've polished the transition of the fan's turning rate to be smooth instead of instant. Also, it would be nice to have a little effects on the fans to make them seem creepy/deranged, since the mc is "Haunted" by his fans.
We feel humbled by your kind words. If we ever finish the game, as we imagined it in the original concept, lerps will be implemented for sure. The stuttering shouldn't affect the gameplay like it does. Also thanks for your Input regarding the artwork to make fans seem more creepy or deranged.
So first of all, great take on the theme, it's always good to see original ideas. It also has a great vibe, with the selfie allergy as well, but I was chuckling when the music first switched to pursuer mode.
There are some things to improve that would mean a lot, but I see they were pointed out already by others, so I won't echo them.
Also, I think I found a safe space, away from the fans, so I'll just settle down here:
Thanks so much for playing, and thank you for seeing the potential behind the mess. We had to ditch most of the original concept, since we underestimated basic challenges. What a great way to learn. But we were quite proud of the navigation mesh, which we assumed enclosed ;)
Honestly that's the biggest reward of these jams, you learn so much you wouldn't otherwise by polishing the same one feature for weeks.
Nice work! Echoing some other comments, the collision weren't obvious so it made it a little more challenging, I also would have liked the fans to lerp their facing direction so you could get a better sense of the pattern but I know it can get bananas at the end of the jam. It took a couple tries to get to the end but I'm still chuckling over the death by selfie.
good point! lerping rotation would have been a great addition. we basically took the movement paths of navigation agent and follow them unquestioned :)
Love the take , and like others said, chase music is spot on.
Wonderful job.
didn't find the end of the level but had a lot of fun. The audio is really great, especially the track while you're getting chased
Nice apples. My favorite game so far. It took me a bit to figure out how it worked, and where I could walk or not, but the mood was <3, the difficulty wast right and I enjoyed every bit of it.
Loved the sound design on this, it was a real adrenaline boost when you got spotted. It was a bit confusing to work out where you were supposed to go but I managed to beat it third try (bananas!)
Thanks a lot! your mention of the sound design means a lot because we sacrificed some QoL improvements in the end in favour of recording the audio and squeezing that in.
Sorry for the confusion in the beginning. we were hoping that players gravitate naturally to right in the beginning. should have made that clearer!
