  • This was an interesting take on the board clear arcade games I remember when I was younger. The execution was fun and inspired and the music really fit the theme and drive of the game. The easy-to-understand mechanics made jumping into the game fun and quick to progress in. I do wish that my controller worked, but that could have been a hardware issue on my end. Moving on to the Game Design Document, most of what I look for was there, except for the development timeline. The development timeline is important for a few reasons: (1) it gives a check for progression, being able to not when things get done and having a clear view of the steps required for the goal, (2) it gives a sense of dependency/importance as certain items will need to be completed before others (i.e. don’t just put the final day as the finish date for every item), and (3) it shows what extra items can be accomplished if there is time, or what things can be left for the next build if you are running behind. All in all, great work!

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
Yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarise your game!
The game is a score-chasing arcade platformer where you play as a sentient mask. You hop from face to face, killing the enemies as you go and collecting cherries for points. Latching onto an enemies face will grant you the power to possess them and reposition.

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
You play as a sentient oni mask who kills people by leaping off their face at high speeds. In that sense, you are literally a weapon as you kill all the enemies in the level using your body.

Congrats on finishing the jam! This is a nice short game. Definitely arcade-y in terms of art, music and design. Great job! I got a score of 018900.

I think there's a few areas of improvement:

  • It would be nice if the tutorial was a series of different rooms with different simple situations to show off the mechanics. Having the tutorial room be a one-off of the main stage was probably for timeline constraints, but it made it difficult to really understand the different mechanics.
  • I found that I did not really need the detach mechanic. What I just did was posses a character, move them beside another one and then possess that one. It made clearing the stages easy.
  • Similarly I didn't feel the need to go after cherries.
  • I liked the guy that falls down. I missed him once!
  • I wish that gamepad mode triggered when you used it instead of toggling for a button. I also wish toggling the button was displayed on the main screen instead of in the settings. I am old: zxc is not intuitive. I thought I had to pressed enter/space on the keyboard but it was z to get to the settings.
  • A couple of times I went to launch into one of the guys and somehow missed when I thought I should have hit him. Maybe it's me but maybe it needs to be tweaked?

I ran into some bugs:

  • In the tutorial I had one guy left and I launched myself into a cherry. The guy died and I think I got the cherry and the game asked me to choose a victim instead of returning to the main menu. This is a softlock.
  • When playing the main game I had one victim left. I launched off of him and hit a wall and died. It them asked me to choose a victim and soft locked me. Might be the same bug.

Otherwise great job! Really successful at implementing their vision!

This game is aesthetically excellent. The art is phenomenal, the animations are really fluid, the music slaps, and the UI is extremely clean.

The gameloop is short and sweet, I enjoyed the variety of characters you introduced and working out how to adapt to them. I really liked the way time slowed while launching, but I did then spend most of my time in 'launch' mode to make lining shots up easier, which I assume wasn't the intended approach.

The controls did take some time to get used to, but I think if they were rebound/I played on controller the gameplay would be a lot more intuitive.

The foundation is really solid, I could see how you could build off it to add more complexity and depth. Great work, this is a good, unique entry!

A fun little game! The menu controls are a little weird, and seems more for an arcade style or console type game rather than a PC/Web game.

The game looks really good, the art is nice, the sound design is great!

The game seems really simple and the difficulty seems a little too easy, as I lost more lives experimenting what it can do rather than actually dying. Wish there were more variety of enemies, or perhaps have the enemies run away from you when your mask is on someone.

The final level was also a little abrupt, as there was no indication that the game is over until the score suddenly came up on the screen. If you’re updating the game, more content would be great as the game is a little short currently.

Overall a fun little experience! Great job!

The key bindings are a bit weird. it took me quite some time to figure out that it was z to confirm in the menu instead of enter or space. You could mention it on your itch page.

The games feels very polished, its goregous and the sound design is really good. Is the game in a fixed amount of rounds ? I was under the impression that I sill had lives left when the score screen displayed.

Other than that I can't think of anything else to say, congrats !

Very interesting concept. All the art is very clean. Music is cool. The scoring system is nice, although maybe you should be allowed to collect a cherry on the last person per round (but maybe the timer is halved?). Got through it on normal difficulty. Well done.

Thank you for your comment! I did actually try to get that feature working but gave up and submitted. I think the idea of the final person's timer being halved is really clever though.

The gameplay is relatively simple, though everything else is well polished. Nice fade in fade out animations, simple tutorial, juiciness in the right places. Overall a well made little game.

this game is really cool i liked it a lot i really liked the gameplay loop and all the core mechanics felt really satisfying to use. I was really absolutely horrendous at this game for some reason and almost ran out of lives on easy, but I definitely see and feel the vision here and it's really cool. i think it'd be cool with maybe more enemy variation like maybe some kill you if you don't get off in time or there are obstacles. this is really cool and has lots of polish :D good job getting your game out there :D

Everything is overall very good (graphics, polish , sounds). I just find gameplay very repetetive. Each level is more the less same concept. As casual mobile game it could work, but I personally miss the variety. Check game bad ice cream which have similar style but large amount of variety.

Very nice, very polished.
Not quite used to the ZXC sheme but once I did the game became very enjoyable to play.
Good job!

Good game, all was good like is a solid submission, the slow when charging the throw was amazing

Visually beatiful, really nice sounds and music. Fits the theme really well and overall is really polished. The only issue I have with this is that the controls are a little bit clunky and takes a long time to get used to, but other than that it's great!

A perfectly complete package. Very satisfying and juicy. Love the classic/emulator/zxc controls on keyboard, good choice.

Once you get into a loop of capturing and swapping between enemies it's really satisfying to play!

Took me a while to understand the game loop. I'm still not exactly sure if there is an advantage of throwing over jumping (tutorial didn't really specify it). Switching to controller on main menu is not super clear, should be some mention that you need to press select.

Other than this, game is super polished. I like the art, feels good jumping from person to person when you get it!

Great game!

Developer

It's not super obvious but throwing gives you more points (200 as opposed to 100)

The game gave me vibes of "TowerFall Ascension" game. As many mentioned, colors and VFX juice of the game look and feel amazing, awesome job there. Like the overall experience and game is fantastic but there are some key moments that simply didn't allow me to enjoy it at full:
1. Font is terrible. I barely understood the writings and Q (as one o the controls) looks like O which can get confusing. I'm sure there are better pixel art style fonts that are more readable
2. The screen size was small and everything was so close to each other. IMHO, would've been a lot better if the play are is bigger and everything else smaller. Similar to Towerfall. I think their proportions are great example.
3. As others mentioned, the controls were odd, I agree with that. Had to spend some time to get used but still had minor flaws. On controller I'm sure it works better.

Despite these things I can imagine this game being a nice coach game with some minor improvements. Its already pretty polished game so props on that.

Loving the play of this. Just feels very arcadey and brutal. So much content in such a short amount of time. I like how quickly the rounds go and how you can combo between different people. I could see this being on an arcade machine or on the SNES or something. Blood. So much blood. The art, music and sound FX really tie this one together. Well done.

Great entry!

This is very fun! Love the art style, the silliness. The controls feels nice and the feedback is great too. Nicely done! I think the jumping height is too low and I ended up not using it at all because I can always wrap back to the top, but that sometimes do hinder mobility a bit. If it's not intended to be used then why not just let the character move as they should (i.e. not jumping for the normal guy, jumping for the blonde guy (that annoying blonde guy) and maybe tripping while walking for the pink guy). Also, the cherry is quite hard to take advantage of, quite situational to be honest and usually gets skipped most of the time, especially when you are concerned with lives. Generally, the game is very well made and I liked it very much! Well done!

This was fun! Also, the general polish and sound effects, screen transition, nice particle work and splashes go a really long way to make this feel authentic. I had a good time killing all the guys! For some constructive feedback, perhaps zxc are a bit weird for keyboard. maybe not for everyone, but I found them a bit strange. But this was one of my favs so far and I think it fits the theme well too!

Cool game, reminds me of the arcade era where you could put in more coins to try again, feels like a combo system could be added for consecutive jumps for some momentum build up , also has nice art and animations
