How does your game fit the theme?
It seems like it's so calm and you just keep scoring - but watch out.... It's the calm before the storm!

Did you write all the code and made all the assets from scratch?
I created a vast majority of the code from scratch. Any assets used should be credited on the itch.io page.

The cloud boss was very well done! The unpredictable pattern of the storm cloud felt well balanced, difficult enough to be challenging but fair enough to still be fun. And having to touch the target and not the boss to damage him was a really fun way to do the fight. Some criticisms: the map is laid out in a way that forces the player to go in the same clockwise loop over and over, which gets a bit stale quickly. One solution could be to lower the right side platform so that the player can jump on to it from the bottom one. Also allowing the player to drop down through platforms would have brought more depth to the movement and added more skill expression in the storm phase. I liked the cloud and player sprites/animations a lot, but the background and platforms both (a) clash with them in style and (b) lack in quality in comparison. I think the overall aesthetic would be much better if the platforms and background were up to the same high level of the cloud and player. Overall, I think this is a solid entry with some nice art, a cool boss battle, and a good application of the theme. Keep it up!

I wanted to have more done than this and I think you may be right the the layout should be improved. If possible I wonder if it would be better if you could go through a whole level instead of one static place, of course it would be more difficult to make but it may end up being more fun. With some improvements on the graphics like having more than a solid color for the ground, combined with a working online high score leaderboard and some additional things might make my game better. Thanks for your feedback it may be really helpful and really appreciate it.

I have already checked out your game and may be rating and commenting on it soon.

holy ... the moods were intense in this game! :D

really like what you did with the character designs, the background art and the different music tracks to create strong emotional impact.

here's some suggestions/issues i cam across.

the fact that i couldn't jump from the bottom to the right platform seemed too limiting. i won the game by hiding slightly outside the screen border but not far enough to die.

the menu buttons are broken with controller for me, have to wail left-right several times before button changes.

i liked this game!

You can, here's a secret, you can hold down the "up" while jumping (Up on gamepad, up on joystick, up on arrow key, I, or W) and you should be able to make that jump. See if that works.

However, I'm glad you pointed this out. If I were to update the game post jam, I'm not sure if I will keep the jumping this way, but if I did, I might consider to spell this out explicitly on the itch.io page.

I have played your game and may be rating and commenting on it soon.

pretty fun. Fits the theme well, after playing a bit I was camping the coins by the cloud and it gets a bit scary because you don't know when he'll get mad, lol.

Developer

Thanks, I really wish I had gotten a lot more done, but I'm glad you were able to enjoy it at all even like this - thanks for your comment! I've played yours and it's a really good submission, I may even consider playing it again sometime.

The game was cool! I’m not sure if it ends at some point—I got about 40 coins and stopped, but I had fun. I liked the choice between getting more life or time at the cost of score versus just continuing. It would be awesome to see different levels or the platform changing to add more variety. Maybe adding more clouds or increasing the difficulty as your score goes up could make it even more engaging (just some ideas, of course). Overall, great game!

I got 15 as my high score. I don’t know if this was correct but the cloud eventually didn’t have the target on it’s head to jump on after a couple of rounds and it got really crazy haha. Also thank you for implementing control over the jumps based on how long you press, that really gave you good control to avoid the stormy cloud.

I also originally felt bad for the cloud haha it looked all sad then it gets all mean lol and I no longer felt bad for the cloud lol

It should show up, it may take longer to show up on later rounds. The amount of time is random between some range though. If it is true that it never shows up at all, that might be some rare bug, but I didn't get this bug. Another possibility is that the visual only doesn't show up, though I didn't get that bug either. If you are pretty sure it might be a bug rather than because it was just the time being longer on some rounds, let me know, including how to reproduce it.

It is also possible that because there is some element of randomness, then if you are really unlucky, and didn't use the timer powerup to restore the full time in between rounds, then the amount of time might be so long on later rounds before the target appears that you might lose due to time running out.  On other runs, you can just not use anything at all and still win.

Very simple but fun game to play. Enjoyed it <3

Nice gameplay mechanic, and it is easy to learn how to play it

You've got a decent game loop here. Would love to see it with some more level designs and maybe making the storm stronger/faster each level. Overall, well done!

I liked the art and quick little animations here. Especially on the lighting cloud. I also like the difficulty of hitting the cloud's crit spot. Although, I wish there was more of a goal and maybe a way to improve your character over time.

Simple but nice graphics, and has a really satisfying gameplay loop. I like making the player choose between more health, score or time. Also like how you have to attack the storm to go back to the calm stage, rather then including a timeout as well, as I was trying to cheese it by standing on the far left outside of its movement path, but yeah that didn't work :) Anyway, great work!

Amazing game, simple but it works.
Love the trading in points for a longer live idea!

Maybe a short invincibility period after hitting the target would be nice to jump on it's "head" bit it is fun this way too, makes it a bit more challanging.

Fun game to have played and love that you added leaderboard, wish I could add a death counter but did not have the time to figure it out.

The jumping feels nice and floaty which I liked, the use of the score to trade health or time is creative since it’s a scoring game.

I like the cloud when it’s calmed and when the storm hits, I feel a bit tense for the music. Which is not much of something I’m looking for right now but the atmosphere really changed, I share my highest score!

An interesting way to incorporate the theme with a simple gameplay loop. To make it a bit more interesting maybe place coins around the map and include some more platforms.

Developer

I definitely wanted to have more than this just in general, and your suggestions are pretty good ideas to consider for improvement, thanks for checking it out!

Cool Game i liked the pixel art also the mechanism of the game was also interesting overall had fun while playing it

the whole mechanic with buying hearts and time was a veeery interesting idea!

and the game was charming and simple (also no bugs)!

having a few more platforms and a bit bigger level would allow for a little more play with movement.

also, as much as i tried i didn't manage to hit the target on the clouds head without being hit. that being said that may be my own skill issue :P

good job!

Developer (1 edit)

It is possible to hit the target without being hit yourself but it's currently kind of hard to do it. It also may not be too clear you are still being hit by the lightning somehow whenever that happens. That might be my fault that I didn't think of a way to make that show up more clearly with some combination of cues in the game.

Submitted(+1)

naaah, it was clear that i had to "clear" the cloud but i just couldn't do it :P

maybe try a more forgiving hitbox/collider if you wanna experiment! ggs!

Fun game!

I would definitely consider expanding this after the jam. It has good potential and the mechanics overall are quite interesting. I think it lacks a bit of polish at this point but it has a LOT of potential.

Developer (2 edits)

I think it lacks some polish as well and also it has much less in general than I wanted in terms of gameplay, so I agree with you. Thanks for your feedback!

I like the arcade cabinet or old school console vibe I get from the game. Nice game.
