This is great - love the focus on story and interesting choices. Amazing amount of writing for such a short jam. Thanks for sharing it.

I wasn't able to submit a rating in time, but this is so lovely

Some of the custom art clashes a bit with the RPG maker basic, but I do enjoy the style you were going for.

The themeing is nice too with the fae (I was worried at Nia telling them their name so quickly o.o;; )

I love the Revenant so much.

But yeah, amazing work you two! <3

Developer

Aw, thank you!

I do agree about some of the assets. I simply ran out of time to make all of my own tiles. My general plan is to come back to it after the jam and remake everything in the appropriate style when I have a little more time to agonize over getting the perfect autotile, haha.

You're right though,  Nia probably shouldn't have been sharing her name with the tylwyth teg. Granny would be very disappointed, haha.
Hopefully Bran honoured their agreement in the end.

This felt like a complete small game. Well done on putting this together in one week, that's hard to do.

Developer

To be honest I'm still shocked I was able to wrap it all up by the deadline. Around Friday I was certain it was going to be impossible, haha.

Really enjoyed the time I spent playing this game! The narrative was pretty interesting, and making decisions was pretty challenging. I enjoyed the fact that there are several endings, which allowed for replayability, or in my case, saving before my first decision to see the other endings. Overall I enjoyed exploring everyone's areas and poking around to gather information. Didn't expect having to solve a cypher at one point, it was pretty surprising. The audio and the art do give the game its own cool atmosphere, but the story itself also played a big part in my enjoyment.

Developer

Thanks! :D
The cypher was an idea from Whyms and it's a bit unusual for a game,  but it adds a bit of extra puzzling.  It would also have been possibly to just check all the trees,  but if you're prepared to work on the cypher,  you get the reward.
Very pleased to hear you liked both the art and story.  We were really keen on trying to keep the narrative part captivating as we had no idea how much we'd get done gameplay-wise,  and I think all-in-all the result has been reasonably solid,  even if there are a lot of things I'd like to work on on it in future.

Thanks for commenting!

very cool music and art, Narrative was crazy good. cant say anything wrong with this game, also went with revenant.

Developer

Thank you!  Really glad you got into it and it's great to hear what ending you chose.  Whyms will be very pleased about it, haha.
That's really high praise, and I'm very flattered.

Great little game! I got all the bodies and solved the cipher, and decided to go with the Remnant in the end. After all, he's right - many people deal with tragedies but he's the only one that's got a guaranteed shitty eternity to deal with! That being said, upon opening the tomb in the castle, I almost changed my mind...

I think you did an awesome job with the narrative. The dialogue and storytelling are the best I've experienced in the jam so far! I don't know how much RPGMaker gives you, but the world was cool and I enjoyed exploring everything. I think you did a great job within the constraints of the jam. Well done!

Developer

So happy to hear you enjoyed it!
And Whyms will be relieved because she's a big Revenant fan and has been worried that everyone was going to be choosing the King, haha.

Hearing who people chose in the end is always brilliant.

Decent story was really the key thing we were aiming for in our entry,  as we both love writing and knew whatever we did would be very narrative in nature,  so the fact that people seem to largely like the story  been wonderful,  especially as it has been Whyms' first jam,  and my first where I'm actually putting the game together rather than giving someone else some assets.

Cheers!

Great to hear, you guys really did an awesome job :) I definitely didn't make it to submitting for my first few, so props to you and Whyms for having a complete experience (and a good one at that!)

Submitted

Very cool! I of course had to help the king, the other two are awful people. But the king? Poor dude...

I will say the design of the top level I wasn't a fan of. I ended up having to track to the house from the area with the bird a couple times, and it was annoying with how the river was made.

Also I sequence broke a bit and broke the game. You can go to the right area and top area before you are told about needing to collect the bodies. If you then talk and get told to collect the bodies and go to the left area, you break the game.

Overall fantastic story, part of me wants to get the other endings but it's a hefty little game for a jam!

Developer

Thank you for letting us know about the sequence break, and your criticism of the design! That's very helpful.

As for the king and other characters, I also appreciate your feedback on that front! The time constraints made it difficult for me to properly flesh out the idea, but I had wanted to make it to where there was no choice that was necessarily the wrong one. If Lost and I were to make another version of this game after the Parade, I'd probably want to make things feel a bit less cut and dry, but I'm still very happy that people have been finding the narrative entertaining enough that they want to go for the endings they missed. Thank you very much for your feedback, and I'm glad you enjoyed!

Developer

Nice catch on the sequence break there, thought I'd walled that off.  I'll have to go and fix a couple of switches!

Submitted

Haha I didn't mean too! I just was talking to everyone and walked too far to the right, so assumed that's what I was supposed to do!

Developer

Yes that was my bad. I left some switches out, haha.
Just fixed it in my polished edition,  so thank you for pointing it out because I would never have noticed otherwise.

The game has cool visuals, but I found it has a huge lack of feedback, which makes the experience a little shaky. The story is cool, but it takes a bit to kick in, and it might be too long for many. Anyway, the game is good, and with a good work of polishing it could end up more than well :)

Developer(+1)

That's fair.
A lot of the general feel of the play experience is due in part to me being a relative beginner to the actual 'making the game'  part of the development (I'm usually involved just in the art/narrative design capacity.). There are plenty of ways to work on it,  and I feel like I could probably tackle them with more confidence were I to refine the game after spending a week learning as I went.

We're hoping to maybe work on refining the title after the jam (in a more thorough way than the polish submission) so it gives a few things to think about and work on.

Cheers for the feedback!

Hey, the game definitely stands out with a more narrative approach! As has been mentioned before, some of the dialogues could be cut a little bit, but overall the effect is good.

I think what was a bit annoying when it comes to the gameplay is not being able to use wasd keys, as that is basically a muscle memory to me :)

Developer

Thank you!
Narrative was definitely our big focus for the title as we're both very into writing,  and it's great that people seem to have enjoyed that.

One of the things I' trying to take in the polish stage is to just cut a bit of extraneous chatting and tweak one part of the starting dialogue to a dialogue choice,  so some of the exposition becomes optional.

WASD is a good point. There's a few quality of life changes that I would like to do if I was working on the game after the jam, one being keyboard config options.

Good entry. I thought the story was excellent. I enjoyed the writing a lot and I found myself playing for longer than I had given myself for the ratings. That being said I did not complete it. It is too long for a jam that has such a short window to rate and so many games submitted. That's no criticism of what you have done, more just the reality of how I am meeting it for the first time.

Developer

Oh that's perfectly fair, there are a lot of entries to look at,  the general idea was to try and create what felt like a relatively sizable game (by the development time standards)  but you can get a measure of it without finishing. About half the King's section was cut,  so it might have ended up bigger still if I'd had a few more free hours, haha.
I'm glad the story pulled you in,  as that's what we were going for most.

I like this game a lot! :D I'm so invested in the story that I'm going to replay it to unlock the other two endings. The character sprites and portraits look very nice too. The map seems a bit too big though so going back and forth to retrieve an item takes a long time, but overall it's nicely designed.

Developer (1 edit)

Glad you had fun with it and felt invested! I was concerned a few of the areas wound up a bit too big and empty in places.
Turning on autodash in the options  helps,  though ideally I would probably rework a few of the bits design-wise.

Great little RPG Maker Game! The story was fun, and I was invested to see the end! My feedback is: Some of the dialogues were a tiny bit longer than I think they should be… and some backtracks were not necessary (the shovel, and the key). Besides that, it was pretty fun!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for your feedback! I agree that some places probably could have been broken up a bit in terms of dialogue, and I actually had plans to write in some in-between scenes. If my teammate and I ever remake this game in the future, I'd probably want to space the opening out, and write in some more puzzles and gameplay. I'm glad that you enjoyed the story, though, and found it enjoyable regardless!

Developer(+1)

Glad you enjoyed it!
That's fair.
A couple of  wishlist of tweaks for polish week are going to be addressing a couple of those issues.
(A dialogue choice at the beginning so it's not one big  back-and-forth,  and swapping some event stuff,  allowing the shovel to be picked up first time.) The castle bit was more down to me trying to fit two tasks onto one map,  which was purely a deadline thing and something I'd like to change along the way.

What I'm most pleased about is you found it engaging, it's great to know that people think the core is solid,  even if we could improve on some aspects. It helps us do better on the next go around.
Thank you!

I had a nice little play of this this morning before I started work and foudn myself wanting to get back into it afterwards to see where it went xD. This is a lovely narrative game, and is still very playable gameplay wise which is good going since I knew you didn't have a programmer on the team xD.  Only downside I felt was that some dialogue bits went on a bit longer than I would've wanted, esspecially in the early game, but thats probs just me xD Would totally get a good rating from me if I could rate the game in the jam xD

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it and that it stuck with you!
I know the game is quite wordy and I had been worried the intro was very dialogue focused and I could have done more to break it up,  though I think that comes down to time. I feel like if we ever extended the game the initial scene would probably be broken up a bit so the player had a bit more to do,  but deadlines and all,  you know how it is, haha.

Thanks for checking in, nice hearing from a former teammate!

Very good writing that pulled me into playing more, good job!

Submitted(+2)

When submitting a narrative focused entry to a game jam, the story has to be exceptional to grab the players attention. Not only did this game managed to grab my attention, it did so with such stellar writing that I am envious that I do not have a writer at my own disposal. The art is charming as well, but it does feel a bit detached from the base tile set, which could be solved by using a more abstract custom tile set. All in all a gem between all the gameplay oriented entries and a job well done!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for the comment!
As both me and Whyms are very into writing we decided when we first teamed up whatever we were doing would be very narrative-driven. We spent a while going back-and-forth about story and character stuff, and Whyms has put absolutely hours into all the dialogue, (Think the dialogue doc was about 70 pages by the jam's end.)  so I'm so glad it shows.

To be honest I completely agree with you about the tileset. My intent had been to make a fully custom set,  but I simply ran out of time and decided to cut my losses by Saturday. We've talked a bit about coming back to it after the jam with fully custom assets.

I'm really glad you enjoyed it overall,  it's so nice to have people playing the game.

Developer

Thank you very much for your feedback, and for your kind words! As Lost said in her comment, when we first teamed up we mutually agreed that it would likely be best for us to focus on putting together a narrative-based experience.  Since this was my very first Game Jam, and it was my job to work on the script, I felt fairly nervous, so I'm glad that you enjoyed it so much.

Wonderful story-telling and fun puzzle elements. Good project.
