Quite a complete game for a jam, having a little story at first, then an open map. Followed by caves with a map for them and the upgrades. Honestly good job.

The combats feel a bit slow before upgrading attack, however, I liked the way you used mimic. I felt like having to use the mouse to select the attack/def/mimic THEN using keyboard to select target is a bit counterintuitive, I personally try to focus on mouse only or keyboard only.

Nevertheless, well done Boebi! Great game :)

Developer

Thanks! Yeah, a lot of people mentioned the mouse -> keyboard thing was a bit off. I was hoping to get a menu similar to the Paper Mario games honestly lol, just ran out of time. Glad you enjoyed it :)

Pretty cool game! I unfortunately couldn't hear any sfx or music on the web build which was the version I played. I liked the mimic theme for the wildcards in stealing abilities!

Developer

Thanks for playing! Unfortunately I didn’t get around to making sfx/music. I barely got the game working as is lol. I thought most people would go the “not as it seems” sort of mimic, so I tried my best to do something a little different :p

I liked the concept and not having to rush it due to the turnbased nature of the game made it perfect to play during office hours (:
My only critic would be that i had to select my attack choice with the mouse, but had to do everything else with the keyboard. But I'm not sure if this was by design or I just got a weird bug.
Overall liked it! You did a good job! (:

Developer

Thanks. I wanted to set up a better menu for combat actions but just ran out of time :(

Glad to hear you enjoyed it!

Cool idea! I enjoyed the turn-based combat. The exploration element was fun - I am terrible at directions so got lost easily, that's just me though :) Well done!

Developer

Thanks for playing! I should have had the map update to show player location for sure, not your fault haha

I like the pokemon-esque blend with binding of isaac, clever! The mimic ability great as others have mentioned and I liked the art for the enemies. A small tween to move the enemies/player when attacking or taking damage would have been appreciated, but this is a great base to build off of. Great work!

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yeah in retrospect I should have done something simple like that for attacking, I was thinking a bit overly complex on how to do it and chose not to as it would take a lot of time haha.

The mimic ability was definitely a fun one to have – great start to a turn-based RPG. Hope this one gets developed more post-jam!

Developer

Thanks for playing! It is a good start! My code is an absolute mess this time around so I’d probably restart the whole thing, if I were to work on it more, given how much I learned while developing lol.

Really nice and simple game!

Thanks for playing!

Hey, I remember this game from the Discord channel, pretty interesting implementation of the combat and the dungeons! I wish there were more variations to the attacks, maybe different spells or weapons, but I understand the timeframe of a jam is quite limited. Good job, mate!

Edit: I ended up dying for the jelly boss, cause its attack damage was bigger than mine and I was already mid health because of the previous fights

Developer

Hey! Thanks for playing! I was hoping to get some more mimic abilities implemented and maybe even a special/spell attack. Simply ran out of time and I already cut so many corners to get it working. I didn’t wanna stretch it and break the whole thing lol.

Yeah, the slime is a tough guy. Sort of RNG if it attacks all the time or not :p

Super nostalgic gameplay here.  I love a good top-down dungeon!

Ah, this brings back memories of old school FF games on the NES! FYI, I don't know if this was a bug or intended: I beat the boss of the cave and it spawned the ladder. I went back to explore the rooms I hadn't finished yet, and when I came back the ladder was gone and the boss respawned.

Developer

Hey, thanks for playing! Lol that’s most definitely a bug haha.

Nice work mate! Ive always wanted to make a turn based!

Really cool game, I loved the turn battle system!

Developer

Thanks for playing!

The game was fun to play. I think you should add a small player marker to the map so we can know which room the player is in. Also, keep working on this. This game has  good potential.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the kind words! I totally planned to have some indicator, then I got lost in working on other things, and it completely slipped my mind haha.

Nice game ! There is all the elements for neat rogue-lite here :) It was fun to play and satisfying to beat the boss. Special mentionfor the map ! Maybe a little visual feed back when hitting the enemies would add to the dynamic. Also, the mimic ability is a good mechanic. Well done!

(i didn't get any sound though, is it a problem with how the game launch ?)

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback! A lot of visual feedback stuff was lacking this game haha. Hopefully I can improve for next jam :)

I played this a lot longer than I expected I would, I realised with the 20% health back using the bat mimic if I dumped all points into attack I could become unstoppable. The scaling with upgrades is really strong so I played until I could 1 hit the boss, such power hahah even with it all stripped back the core is solid and inherently addictive. Also was very nice to not be reset after dying.

The mimic ability could be a little more dynamic if you can only copy 1 ability at a time, meaning you might actually swap what ability you’ve copied mid battle, you know you plan to block for the next couple rounds so you spend a turn to swap from bat to spikes mimic.

Not sure if it’s the only cause for the game stalling but it did it for me if the residual damage from the shield dealt the killing blow for the round. I was able to reproduce it as well and had no problems as long as I used an attack to kill the final enemy.

Really fun stuff had a good time!

Developer(+1)

Wow, thanks so much for the praise! It’s a pretty bare bones version of what I had envisioned but I’m glad someone found some enjoyment from it! I like the strategy you pulled with putting everything into Attack, and how it scales so well with lifesteal - I didn’t think of that at first haha.

Gamedev is hard. I can see all the potential ideas that you probably wanted in the game. If only there was enough time, right? :)

Developer(+1)

It is hard! haha. Even when things don’t turn out as you invision, you will learn a lot of tricks along the way. Thanks for the kind words.

Submitted(+1)

Cool game! I like the restoring the village idea. The mimic ability is interesting and it has a great foundation. The fighting is fairly slow and I wish there was more strategy involved.

Developer(+1)

Yeah, I was hoping to add another attacking mechanic to spice things up but the code was devolving at that point so I just got everything in a stable situation before the end of jam haha

Submitted(+1)

I like the mimic mechanic!

May not be the root cause of freezing but there seems to be errors printing in the console whenever I move which can lower performance with enough of them - after going through the dungeon once my console is at 13,000. The error message is "index.js:474 USER ERROR: The InputMap action "DEVKEY" doesn't exist."

Developer

Thanks!

Ohh.. I think I know where thats coming from, I’ll have to look into it, just a testing input I was using.

It's strange having to select the attack with the mouse and confirm the enemy with the keyboard. The coins are above the end of the action text.

Apart from that, good game. If you add some background music and some animations to the enemies, it will be even better. Congrats! :D

Developer

Yeah, I wanted to set something up similar to the Paper Mario games attack selection, but couldn’t get their in time. Definitely needs some music and animations to make it feel more alive. Thanks for playing!
