No, they do not have to be the one that stands out more than every other character in the game. That would be too subjective to enforce.
They do need to “be a prominent character—protagonist NOT included—to the overall narrative for the majority of the story” as in you can’t just have a wolf set off the events of the story for them not be involved for the rest of it. They need to be important to the plot.
Going by the Oxford Languages definition of glorification:
the action of describing or representing something as admirable, especially unjustifiably
For example, if the main character is raping/Non-Con-ing another character, do not have dialogue written in a way that the player is supposed to clearly be deriving pleasure and/or admiration from the rape/Non-Con.
Coding does not count towards the word count.
For Ren’Py VN’s, if someone accuses you of being under 2,000 words or circumventing the requirement, we can easily use a function to count how many words of dialogue there are along with adding up the number of times characters’ names are being displayed.
For other engines, if someone accuses you of being under 2,000 words or circumventing the requirement, an Administrator will play the VN and manually count the number of words.
Remember that you are innocent until proven guilty in these scenarios.
IP means Intellectual Property.
In the context of this Jam, it means a story and characters that came from someone’s mind.
For example, my Non-Jam VN IBWHIP, is my own Intellectual Property because I made it up.
The ever-famous Adastra Series is Howly and HAPS’s IP that they own.
Grammatical mistakes, spelling mistakes and typos are fine as long as you don’t fix them during the Rating Phase in June unless you don’t want to be part of the Rating Phase.
We have no say in how harsh or forgiving people will be to such mistakes during the Rating Phase.
Also remember that you can use Rule 7 and work on the translation in June if you want.
Codes that you’ve experimented with don’t count.
You can learn as much as you want before the Jam and experiment as much as you want before the Jam. But any actual super custom coding for the story should be done during the Jam.
For example, in Ren’Py, you can learn how to use LayeredImages to assemble and display sprites. You can use placeholder images to learn, such as previous MAY WOLF premade assets, but you shouldn’t then copy-and-paste all of the code that you were using to learn, for the Jam.
Another example would be if you want to make a VN/RPG Hybrid, you can experiment with making a RPG Battle and Inventory System as long as anything very specifically related to the story and Jam entry isn’t done until the Jam starts.
Will answer the other part soon.

Please ask any questions about Rule 1: Working & Planning
1.You can only work on your project during the month of May
- Brainstorming, Plot Outlining, Sketching (that does not lead to direct production of assets), Team Building, Photo Taking & Creative-Commons/Licensed Asset Collecting before the jam starts is allowed.
- You’re encouraged to learn and experiment with different skills and story/gameplay mechanics before May.
Please ask any questions about Rule 2: Releasing & Updating
2.Submissions will be taken during the month of May.
- Promotional images and descriptions on the itch.io page can be altered during the Jam Rating Phase.
- If you want your Submission to be part of the Jam Rating Phase in June then don’t add more content nor fix bugs/typos/glitches until the Rating Phase is over.
Please ask any questions about Rule 3: Story Requirements
3.Your submission must fulfill all of the following specifications:
- Use—at minimum—one of the (premade Wolves) OR (draw yourself or commision someone else to draw your own wolf OC) OR (draw/commission someone else’s wolf OC while having explicit permission to use them from the owner.)
- Have a wolf, or wolves, be a prominent character—protagonist NOT included—to the overall narrative for the majority of the story.
- Have a word count between 2,000–25,000 words.
- If stories are first written in languages with low space usage, such as Thai, then we’ll go off of an approximation based off of a theoretical English translation.
- Either be (an Original IP) OR (a side-story, prequel, sequel, midquel, etc to an established IP you own or have explicit permission to use from the owner.)
Please ask any questions about Rule 5: Law & Ethics
5.Don’t violate any of itch.io’s TOS while making the Visual Novel and don’t make yourself reasonably vulnerable to a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedown by infringing on serious copyrights. Don’t commit war crimes such as violating the Geneva Conventions.
- Additionally, avoid any glorification of sexual violence or infantilization in the Visual Novel. Do not have a recent history of such glorifications.
