Wow, this is a lot of game for just nine days of work!
The art style is super charming and really well made, especially the cutscene art and the main character's sprite -- my compliments to whoever drew that run animation, they did a really great job conveying the character's motion. The inconsistency of art styles between the varying assets was a little jarring, but given that this is a jam entry that's to be expected, and I don't think it detracted from the game at all. The music and sound effects are minimal but also very good, and I think they do a good job of reinforcing the atmosphere I think you were aiming for.
Like others, I ran into a bit of slowdown here and there, I'm guessing due to particle effects. And I found the controls a bit frustrating, although this could just be the old-timer in me coming out (I don't personally care for using the mouse to attack, I'd rather have a button to attack on the keyboard and attack in whatever direction I'm facing, a la Zelda).
Overall, y'all did a fantastic job on this! It's very creative and I can tell you put a lot of love into it!
I really like the story at the beginning, it kinda inspires me to make a story the next time I join! Really cool art. But to be honest, I was a bit disappointed about the gameplay style. I felt like it didn't meet my expectations after that great cutscene.
Still, very impressive that this was made in a week.
Thanks for the feedback! Could you please tell us in which ways the gameplay fell short of your expectations?
It was mainly because the cat didn't look like the one in the cutscene. Also, the map was too empty and the art style didn't match the scene. Lastly, the attack animation was just a swinging sword? It would've been nice for the player to change sprites even if it was bad. I definitely think that these things could've been implemented. It all felt like it wasn't polished.
Don't take this too hard tho, these are just my own opinions as a gamer with slightly high expectations 🐱❤️.
Keys, they don't make 'em like they used to...
Fun and complete adventure with a balanced length and difficulty. Thought I was just about finished when the sokoban puzzles started. Good level design and very cute and likeable art. I had some difficulties making my way out after finishing the dungeon and though I was soft-locked a few times but always found a way to reset the puzzles eventually. The game freezes for a second everytime the bombs explode (firefox) but I read below that you are already aware of that :) The 2 weapon upgrades both felt really rewarding after already showing the player areas that couldn't be reached without them.
Nice Zelda-like, I really liked the golems and the first boss. The final boss was a little frustrating at first until I figured out how to battle it. I think it was good you were explicit with the message there so I would try other tactics (but playing with a trackpad made it quite hard!). Also great art and music!
Nicely done! The design and progression were really thoughtful. Enjoyed the art style!
I love the visual style. Good job!
Very impressive! The dungeons are well thought out, while being very intuitive.
I couldn't see the conclusion, because I accidentally created an evil loop in which two dragons and two princesses were at play!
If you die in battle, the boss is unfortunately not removed, but re-spawned. As far as I know, we have already fixed this locally. Thanks for the hint, but maybe you shouldn't spoil the other players with such a picture ^^’
I removed the picture.
Really fun rpg puzzle dungeon game! The controls, audio and cutscene art were really nice. The puzzles were also really nice and engaging. There are a few bugs like the movement controls stopping to work sometimes and the problem with the sword swings. I also think it matched up with the theme quite well too. Really great entry for the jam!
Really fun and well polished take on a puzzle dungeon game. The cut scene art was fantastic! The movement controls felt pretty smooth, and the walk animations of the cat are so good! I agree with the comments below about the sword swing, but I think its an easy fix with a larger hit box or adjusting the rotation for diagonal movement. I still was able to make it to the end, and the twist was definitely surprising!
My only note is that the background art seems to be at a different pixel scale than the character, and it makes the cat look very large in the environment. It does provide good contrast if that's what you intended, but a higher res cat, or a lower res background could unify the style better. just nit picking really;)
seriously great work overall!
You are actually the first to comment on the obvious scaling error. We know that the elements should all have the same scaling, but when one person is building dungeons, another is pixelating the player and someone else is making the items or the background, it can be hard to get it all to work well together if you don't want the dungeon to look too big, the camera too wide or whatever. You can often only estimate the proportions better through testing and then redoing sprites would be very disappointing. Thanks for the feedback! (:
Fun game! I like the art style and the music; they give the game a lot of charm. It's really impressive how fleshed out the dungeons are, and the puzzles gave me the nice "Aha!" moments when I figured them out. The sword swinging could be better, as others have pointed out, but it wasn't too big an issue for me.
Really fun game, keep up the great work!
I had fun with this game, but sadly didn't get far. (Would love to try again if you tell me how!) I get stuck because the fire staff when I get to it seems to be surrounded by blockades I can't get through, and when I come back into the room it is gone. I figured I'd need that to light the torches outside of the gate next door but I haven't ever been able to reach it, and there seems to be nowhere left to go without the improved sword. I don't know where to find the boss to fight to get it.
The art is fun and the music throughout is really nice, great entry! And it seems other people haven't gotten stuck like I have :P
Sorry about the confusion. You need to finish the forest dungeon first. The entrance to this dungeon is in the east of the spawn area :)
I loved the dungeon-like zelda levels!! I also enjoyed when enemies spawned in the room and I had to get rid of them. Sadly, I got a bug after being killed by the four gollems where I could not traverse through the next rooms even If I killed them. I would love to see mor actions in combat too, but the realization of having to use the bomb for the enemies was pretty dope :)
The cutscene art was great! I could watch the cat knight run animation all day :)
Fun Zelda-like. I was actually frustrated when my first key broke. But then I realized it's probably intentional because of the theme XD
Some small notes:
- I wish the trees were a slightly different color than the grass. That tripped me up more than a few times
- Being accurate with sword swings felt a little harder than it should've been.
Other than those nitpicks it was impressive what your team was able to do in a week
Pretty nice game, I especially like the graphics! And while there are some rough edges (love having my back swing a sword), it's impressive that you've managed to all those mechanics in there. Good job!
This is a really fun game! I enjoyed the music, style, little cinematic and the overall feel of the game. Nice work in the short amount of time!
Hi! This was the most complete game I have yet played. This game had great playtime and content. Cutscenes art was unique and nicely done. Music and sound effects were done well and also good work with options and remappable controls. Gameplay and puzzles were interesting, but there was really a fine line getting lost or knowing the map. I already had seen jam stream about this game yesterday, so I knew little bit ahead.
Some suggestions for improvements:
Good job, I enjoyed it alot! Almost died at the end : D
Many thanks for the feedback! The spawn times were probably not the problem, but the lag caused by rendering the graphical effects. We were also dissatisfied with the sword physics, but we couldn't solve both problems in time.
till now, my favorite best game, really awesome job you did, i love it! i love Zelda <3 Insane Artworks, polished and great boss. thank you for this Entry <3
Very cute game with impressive amounts of content! Two entire dungeons and two boss battles, with 2 upgrades? Very cool stuff!
I did get a bit bothered at small things such as the collision of the sword hit being a bit unclear and
I can tell the level design was really well thought of:
In the second dungeon I thought I was soft locked but no, the rock I couldn't push from the other side ended up saving me from that predicament!
The key breaking was a bit annoying but I see how it can fit into the theme, and the plot twist was erm... o.o
No words for it!
Anyways, good job to all the team!
Really cute game with surprising twists! The golem spawns sure caught me by surprise, and so did the fact that I can blow em up with bombs. There are many little touches here that show how much work has been put in.
I like that the maps arent big enough to feel tedious when having to backtrack, and the combat feels fair enough.
One QOL improvement would probably be to make the gate blockers (removed when you defeat all enemies) cleaer. For a few seconds I couldn't figure out why I couldn't enter the next room, and ended up getting swarmed by golems!
But otherwise, really charming entry! Well done!
