Self-made Game Assets! (Showcase)

I want to see all the games with self-made assets of any type, 2D, 3D, SFX & Musics, Shaders, and even if you implemented  some cool mechanics with some good old coding.

I like to make always my own assets when I can, so I understand how difficult and how much time goes just into that.  I didn't see any topic talking about this,  so that's why I wanted to make it, in order to share our games and receive some feedback on the overall experience and on the assets we created. This way we can improve our weak points and make better games/assets.

I will start by sharing my game:

https://itch.io/jam/acerola-jam-0/rate/2582943

I made all the assets (UI, 3D models and animations, programming + a little shader) apart from all the sounds, they were downloaded from Freesound.org (with a CC0 license) and then edited on Audacity to better fit my needs.

I'm very curious to see all of your "from scratch" games/assets!

Also, good luck! :3

Submitted(+1)

I did my own models and shaders (I actually wrote my whole render pipeline on my own), but stock sound and composited together stock textures (targets use a baked composite using custom masks, terrain uses splat mapping and distortion). I focused mostly on my shaders, using some quick placeholder primitives as assets until fairly late in the jam.

I ended up creating what might be the first-ever non-RTX game to feature physically-accurate water refraction, effect which involves a lot of custom vertex and lighting shaders and a pipeline organized around them.

Wow, seriously good job, bet you worked hard like a maniac. Love to see it dude.

Good luck!❤

I really love the atmosphere you created here! The art is very cool actually, and the fact that the silly little guys are very similar to each other helps to keep the dark and kinda "rough" atmosphere in my opinion.

Keep it up my silly little guy :33

I'm an engineer at my day job but going into this Jam I decided I'd focus on most things outside of programming, so I kept my programming pretty simple using only about a quarter of time for it. In my game I made everything myself except for the player animation as I sadly ran out of time but I did rig the model myself: https://gizimo.itch.io/mouth

Submitted

You did a really good job at making your models, and I really love the concept of this monster's mouth following you. Very original!

Good luck my guy! <3

Thank you very much! ill be checking your game out when I get a chance as I'm at work at the moment but keen to give it a go!

  • Modeled a mecha character in Unity and animated it using Unity’s animation clips. No rigging needed since the mesh doesn’t need to deform.
  • Wrote a bunch of shader graphs for most of the visuals, and a post process outline shader. Animating between them and blending between different colors.
  • Followed some VFX tutorials for making a jet engine thruster VFX, shield VFX, laser VFX, slash VFX.
  • Also have intro, win, and lose game sequences.
  • I made a destructible level using Unity’s terrain system to punch holes in it, and spawn in “Panels” with some random animated properties that get “sucked in” to the black hole. Spent a lot of time on this concepting it and then making it performant enough so I could get the whole level crumbling without lagging out.

Sadly all of this took so long I didn’t spend too much time on making the gameplay as deep as I wanted to and it was hard to balance the boss. I thought it was too easy but everyone playing it was struggling.

https://itch.io/jam/acerola-jam-0/rate/2579700

Submitted

Actually impressive, you really crushed it with the models and all of the VFX and shaders. I can feel you when you talk about balancing, my game features a little minigame part, which went through numerous balancing iterations and still resulted quite difficult for some people. Don't worry too much on what you couldn't do in time, we had just two weeks after all. You really did a very good job here my dude, keep it up :)))))

Also, good luck with the results and all the rest <3

Every art asset in my 3D Platformer game Ooblek was self made  for the jam

https://itch.io/jam/acerola-jam-0/rate/2582914

Submitted

Really cool game, I love the graphics so much and all the assets/animations are very well done! I found the gameplay a little bit repeating at some point, and found one little bug where, if you keep jumping inside the Oobleck, the bad guys that should throw you oobleck balls, just keep raising their arms like they are doing the ola. Quite a funny bug tho and made my experience funnier honestly. Very good job with this my guy.

Good luck! <33

It is shorter to list the things I did not make for the jam
-- the character's shape model [I used vroid studio for the model shape -- then used blender and paint.net to texture that model. character art is... beyond my ability in two weeks.
-- the walk and idle animations. [I had some annoyance with one of my animations not working on multiple models, so i reverted to some open-license mocap animations]

everything else was made during the game jam, and live streamed on twitch. Ended up with a lot less 3d models than I wanted in game, but happy I did everything from scratch. It made the whole experience ... electric. There was no time to judge anything as it was being made. just make it-- throw it in the pile -- and come back to use it in game. No way to make the deadline otherwise. So many things go scrapped completely. others quickly reused in ways they werent originally intended -- because deadline...  SFX were made in a panic induced rush...

I feel you, I did everything in a rush as I wanted to make all of the art, programming, 3D and animations in a very short time. You did a really good job and what I really like is your attitude (do it, if it doesn't look perfect, who cares, let's do something else). Really good game again and good luck with it fellow jammer. :33

thanks for checking it out. i'm finally starting to feel back to normal after the jam schedule. -- and looking forward to checking out some of the  other entries today. This post's responses will be a fun start. cheers.

my game has almost everything made by me (code , models , textures ,  shaders ,  etc )

but I used free sound effects

Hi, I will start saying that I'm so sorry Godot decided to destroy you game like this :((((

You still did a really really good job in that little time, be really proud of yourself. It lagged a little bit for me sometimes but overall was a very cool concept and well executed. Again, screw Godot :(

Good luck mate and keep it up, you are very talented! <3

Submitted

thank you very much for giving your opinion It's true that I didn't have much time, but I enjoyed it a lot.

Submitted

Glad to hear that mate and don't worry, it was still a very great experience. Keep it up <33

Submitted

and in part you could say that it was my fault, I used an experimental version of godot (4.3 dev4) and well it had errors

In the end I passed the project to godot 4.2.1

Submitted

For my game I made all the 3D assets, the animations, the voice over, shaders and scripts all from scratch just for this Jam

It was quite a marathon to be honest, but got through the other side in the end!

https://itch.io/jam/acerola-jam-0/rate/2562492

Let me know what you think?

Submitted

Wow, very good job, actually, a ton of job. I can see you working very hard on this. Can't say much apart from good job. Maybe the sensitivity was a bit too high for me, I couldn't be very precise when aiming at the pickups, it would have been great if there was an option to adjust it. Overall just a great game!

Good luck with it mate! <3

Made (almost) everything myself, including the engine! (Although, i’ve been actively developing the engine since july of 2022, so I don’t know if this counts lol)

There were only two things that weren’t self-made, as far as I remember:

  • The UI fonts, which were taken from royalty-free font faces.
  • The sound effects, which were created from samples from royalty-free and/or public domain sources.

Hi, I just checked out your game and gave you some feedback on it's page. I really love the art style on this one! <3333

i wrote most of the shaders (i used an existing CRT shader as the base for one of mine, but modified it) and the whole engine for my game

also did bitmap font rendering entirely in a shader (shader gets the font and an array with the characters to write)

https://itch.io/jam/acerola-jam-0/rate/2582906

Submitted

Cool, I did font rendering in a shader as well, using SDF bitmaps to support window resizing. https://github.com/george-steel/bowfishing-blitz/blob/main/src/shaders/ui.wgsl

Hi, I'm sorry but it just doesn't run for me, I saw in the comments some other people got the same problem, I will try again later and see if I'm able to play it :((((

Submitted (1 edit)

do you have an intel gpu maybe? it doesn't work on those unfortunately
otherwise you might want to check if you don't have the OpenCL™, OpenGL®, and Vulkan® Compatibility Pack installed -- microsoft pushed it for some people in a windows update and i think it can kinda break opengl? not sure tho

Submitted

I decided to model the map of the game off of my own house, so i designed every asset to match the furniture around my house. The music and sound were also made by me, and I’m personally really happy with the music as it really helps create a homey and casual feel. https://s-0ooo.itch.io/my-house-is-not-my-home

Hi, the game assets are very cool and the atmosphere too. The camera had some weird behaviour sometimes but it didn't ruin my experience.

Well done and keep it up! :333

I think the only things I didn't make were the background image and the font. Art is literally just colored polygons, but yeah that, music, sound fx are all mine. Was working on making my first shader for an energy shield mechanic, but had to cut back on scope

Just checked it out! It is really cool, I enjoyed the music track very much and it really helped creating the right atmosphere. Love to see it!

Well done with the models too and the game in general. Good luck with it mate <333

I learned how to 3D model this jam, and made all the SFX and music in the last 12 hours of the jam haha. The enemies are pixel  art and I also learned how to make shaders. Everything was made from scratch for this jam and I would love if you checked it out! https://sevadusk.itch.io/project-astra

Hi, just played your game and I can say I really enjoyed the gun recoil feeling and the dash speed in general. I got a bug where I fell off the map at a certain point and had to restart again, but it didn't ruin my experience overall.

Also, very food work with all the 3D models, art and music!

Great job and good luck! :333

Hi, just checked out your game. It was really fun to play, I really liked the art on this one. As some comments already pointed out tho, I had an hard time moving around with the WASD movement being dependant on the ship's direction. Apart form that I had a really good experiene playing it, well done!

Good luck with it <33

Thanks, man! Really appreciated the feedback. Controls were something I was worrying about tbh, but just could not find a way:C

For my game I decided to learn vector graphics. All pictures are svg's.
Which would be useful if they were bigger. At least my game weights very little thanks to them.
I suppose there aren't many games that use svg as art.
There is no sound, because I ran out of time. :/

Hi, I just checked your game and I can say it was very unique. It was quite difficult getting the right results, and the sound was a little frustrating, but I still enjoyed a lot. Definitely a very peculiar one. I think it needs just a little bit of polishing because the idea is already very very original.

Really good job here!

Good luck with it! <333

Hi, just finished checking out your game. It was a really fun and enjoyable experience! Really good job with all the models and animations. I would give the player some extra feedback during the playthrough and in particular during the battles, but nothing too fancy. Really good game for a game jam, definitely consider developing it further more after the jam. It just needs some polishing on the UI and some general adjustments, nothing too fancy! :33

Really good job here, good luck in the future!! <333

This is my game, In the Mood for Mood: https://itch.io/jam/acerola-jam-0/rate/2583246

-I 3D modeled the interior. I wrote a script to generate the model for the bolts of fabric.

-I made a cheesy little song loop

-I drew most of the patterns

- I wrote all of the scenarios and outcomes

- I took the picture of lower manhattan in the splash screen

Submitted

Hi, very good job with all the models and stuff. Maybe the gameplay loop was a little repeating but it's a jam game so obviously is limited. Also, I don't know if it is a bug or not, but for me it ends suddenly. It would be nice to put some form of feedback for the player! It just needs a little bit of polishing. Indeed very peculiar tho.

Nice job and good luck! <333

Hi, really cool game, all the graphics were nice. Can I ask you how the strange wire-cubes effect was made? Maybe a particle effect with a transparent cube with painted edges mesh filter? I'm really curious about it!

Overall a very enjoyable game. I really loved the atmosphere you conveyed!

Looking forward to it! Good luck mate <333

Unfortunately it is fatally broken due to a very dumb copy-paste error and can't be finished, but i hope you'll enjoy it as it is.
I'll upload fixed version as soon as jam ends so people can play and complete it if they're interested, but for now I don't want them to judge the full version instead of a legitimate one, even if I can have jam version still available for judges (idk if I can).
All visuals are made by me (as well as code ofc).

Hi LapoLinguini! You already checked my game! But in case you didn't know, everything in Shipkeeper was made by me, with the exception of the sound effects, which I obtained from Opengameart. Some fun facts you may like to know:
- If you got curious and checked the game's git project, you would notice there are various sound effects that have "_mod" at the end of the name. Those are sound effects I modified using Audacity. Simple but effective. One example: The cracking sound you hear when exploring the ship, is actually a door cracking, but adding reverb, making it slower and lowering the pitch.

- All pixel art was made by me. Here is something fun:

The blob was planned to be more like a monster that had the capacity of spreading, and it was going to have three types of blobs, the first one is the one in the game, which attacks with a spike. The next one was supposed to throw acid, and the last one was supposed to be the blob's core, and if you managed to kill it, the whole blob was destroyed. Of course, I didn't had the time for the whole thing, and only the spike one was made. XD

- I also made the music track for the intro! Of all my skills, this one is the most lacking. Most of the time I have no idea what every filter is doing so I just go with my guts and start adding random stuff until I found something that I like how it sounds. For the composition I'm a bit more experienced but everything is by ear, really.

I recently made a second track for the game's trailer, and I published them in my youtube channel
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuWnqz4Yd7OPuE96JM8RlQnNTE_HffbvQ&si=6hPWdDxF...

I started making digital music with Dance Ejay 7 (which is very ancient) and then tried Fruity Loops (which is now FL Studio) and it confused the heck out of me. Recently I started using BandLab and has been much more easier to learn. Still nothing professional tho XD My account there is called SilentCassette

- And finally, all programming by me, which is my actual profession. Did a lot of Computer systems and engineering and now I'm here doing games :p

Hi, thanks a lot for this detailed explanation, I really love to see all the backstage stuff going on. I started studying programming like a year and a half ago, right after I finished high school, and I think I made a lot of progress. It was quite a struggle at the beginning as I didn't know a single thing about coding, but eventually got the hang of it. I also picked up blender on my own and learned how to do 3D models, UV unwrapping and texturing. My gf is studying to become a concept artist so she taught me some photoshop tips and I got quite comfortable at using it too, I also used to draw quite a bit as a kid, so it wasn't that difficult actually. Now I bought a course that teaches some music composition basics, as I want so bad to make my own tracks, but lately I've been very busy with school and stuff so I really couldn't start the lessons. It's been a really long year (and a half almost), but I've come quite far I think. Your comment really helps me keeping the focus and makes me want to do better, not because I envy you but because I admire all of your work and skills, and it pushes me further. Thank you so much for it again. You did a lot of work, you are really talented and all of your hard work shows off in what you do. Good luck with it, keep it up! <3333

PS: Sorry for the outburst :3

Hey! I made all of the assets for my game, aside from the music and sound effects.

I'm really happy with how the dynamic lighting looks, and I have a really neat sprite stacking "system" (if you can call it that) with the upgrades, similar to The Binding of Isaac.

With the exception of some CC0 audio from freesound, I made every asset in my game from scratch.

https://hey-tack.itch.io/a-short-walk-in-the-snow

I made the music for the game using LMMS. I made some manual tweaks to the sound with Audacity. Any video / gifs for the game were edited using Shotcut.

I was the most proud of my 3D assets, despite their simplicity. Especially the blendshapes for the face - didn't get as much in-game highlighting as I had planned, but still proud of how easy they were to use in engine.

It's been a long time since I messed about with Blender / 3D modeling in general, and animating in blender. I had also never done animation blending in Godot before, so that was a fun challenge, trying to stitch all the animations together in a way that didn't look awful.

I made all the art, music and sound effects myself. Music and sound effects were tricky to make since I used a program I never used before so it was a bit of a learning curve there. In the game page if you scroll down you can find what I used to make all this.

Making visuals is nothing new to me for games, I was into art, design, and 3D before I even got into game dev.

BUUUUT everything I made before has gotten music from outside sources, either royalty free tunes or getting the okay to use songs from friends. I was about to go royalty free this time, too, but the DIY nature of the jam encouraged me to actually make my own tunes for the first time.

It's not great music, but it's my music https://cheesycoke.itch.io/hostel-west-coast

There's a little outsourcing. Some free-use code, some Freesound SFX, a couple stock photos for added flair. But overall, my baby.

Hello, it's your Revym Rep.

I'm the sole developer behind Better Shield!! The entire project was made 100% "from scratch" during the Acerola Jam 0 starting Mar 4 (only 8 days before the deadline!) Some highlights of the development behind Better Shield! include the following:

Cutscene Player - Uses a list of numbers in the code as opcodes and operands to execute any action such as change an actors position or sprite

Enemy AI Queuing System - All enemies will choose when to attack independently, but they attack in a Queuing System (never all at once) this allows the player to "perfect block" every single attack which makes no-damage runs possible

2D Art - I've never made so much art for a game until Better Shield!! I am happy with the results, although I know a subtly different art style would've made it even better

Story - Most meaningful story I've ever made... I had made more than half the story before the Cutrscene Player was ready, so I didn't even know if it would make the deadline. I'm happy I was able to include many characters, an intro, a secret cutscene, a final cutscene and a strong moral meant to encourage forgiveness and belonging

Everything Else - Self-made within a 7-day time period, including art, sounds, code and anything else involved besides an empty Unity project

I decided not to add any music because it would never match the vibe I was going for: if I did add music though, that would've been self-made too. You can play the game right now for free using the link below! I hope you enjoy playing it and look forward to the sequel coming soon!

https://revym-entertainment.itch.io/bettershield

(btw I played through your game, Hungry Outcast, twice and the story was so relatable: I always spend too much time at the computer, and I almost cried when I saw the empty fridge! I can't believe you've made all assets (during the jam?) besides sounds yourself! I thought Better Shield! deserves to win but Hungry Outcast deserves it even more. Hopefully yours wins, getting it more public attention!)

Thanks for checking this out, and I'll see you next time.

 - Your Revym Rep.

All assets made by me during the jam except an HDRI from ambientcg and a tazer sound from freesounds.
This was my first foray into pre-rendered 3d assets for an isometric setting, a style I've loved for my whole life.
It's quite short and perhaps a bit difficult, but I think it came out looking quite nice. Would appreciate anyone who takes a look.
