The difficulty and controls would need a refinement, but otherwise a really cute game.
The visuals are absolutely stunning. The second I saw the title screen I got hooked. The void expanding around you looks and feels really cool. I wish it was introduced a bit more gradually though.
Beautiful looking game! I love the whole vibe. Level design could use a bit of tweaking but for a game jam it's great. Love the music and SFX! <3
Very original mechanic, fun to play, great graphics. It gets hard pretty fast, I lost patience at the level where your can fall on the trampoline and get shot to the upper right where I constantly died. Would love to see more levels with this mechanic and a slower learning progression.
Fun! but very difficult...
Amazing art! Sounds are spot on! And cool animations!
Incredible shaders!
However the player felt very heavy,
The enemies were such a pain to struggle with, and admittedly I felt really hopeless whenever I saw them in a stage (which led me to skip some levels unfortunately)
Interesting concept. It shows that it leads to some pretty sophisticated levels.
VERY difficult! But I did have fun nonetheless.
Great work!
Coming in here to gush only to see that, of course, I'm just adding my voice to the chorus of "wow"s. I can hardly believe that this was a jam game, y'all did seriously such an outstanding job with it -- art and animation style are so clean, consistent, and polished; music is a jam; and the core mechanic of having to balance the hops and the void is brilliant and goes perfectly hand-in-hand with the level design. Like some other folks in the comments, I've never been much for platformers on account of being Very Bad At Them, but this silly little bunny has well and truly stolen my heart. Doing it for you, little guy.
Really lovely art style and an interesting approach to the mechanic. Controls were a nightmare for me personally and I rage quit in the end.
For those who persevere does the rabbit character get a motivation for hopping around?
there actually is an ending screen with some artwork if you can brave the final level
Plattformers and me wont become long term friends but this one was absolutely lovely. Great job.
Such a well made game. This theme is really bringing the best out of talented people like you.
Solid overall, and I especially appreciate that there are no lives, I can just try again instantly. I suck at platformers, they stress me out but thiso ne haven't. Great job!
Poor Rabbit :(
The mecanics is really original and even if I like hard game, it feel unfair sometime.
The actual DA is insane and consistent!
Well done!
Wow, there are a lot of levels! The main mechanic was interesting and the early levels do a good job of communicating core puzzle-solving mechanics.
However, I do think a lot of the levels felt unfair, where you would be killed quickly before even having a chance to get your bearings. Particularly, jumping on a trampoline often meant dying at least once before you could know where it would have you land.
The game looked great, especially the character design of the rabbit in a hat! The void effect was also really well done.
The art is objectively good, and this style isn't necessarily my favorite; it's just quite good and well executed. The bunny's death animation is seared into my brain. I will echo sentiments that at times I felt I was fighting the movements or controls, but I was only able to play on a keyboard. I could see controller being a lot more pleasant.
All in all, very good and very complete for a game jam game. Fairly bug free as far as I could tell too!
Really good art, had fun but found the levels a bit too precise for the air friction, maybe It's just my skill hahah
Really nice art and fun to "master" (I'm bad at platformers). It'd be great if the camera gave a little look ahead based on player velocity to try and succeed in a challenge first time.
If the void/normal transition was a little bit faster it'd feel better when fixing your mistakes mid jump but maybe that's the point and would detract from the challenge.
Wow what a super cool game !
The 2d art is very nice and I like the idea very much. It's an interesting take on the theme. I would prefer a platform controller less like meatboy though, i.e. less inertia.
Very well made
There's always at least one submission in each jam where you think to yourself, "man, this is *soooo* polished and fun, that if they just worked on this game a bit longer and extended it out beyond what the limited jam time allowed, it's pretty much ready for a commercial release," and Void Hopper is that title in this jam.
The stylistic art, crafty soundwork, and creative animations come together in an exciting way to create a classic platforming experience. With platformers, oftentimes the excellent mechanic work is let down by lack of thought in design, or vice versa, but here what shines the most is how the mechanics compliment the (dare I say?) genius level design.
The levels are thoughtfully put together. Perfectly challenging, the user experience of giving the player unlimited retries to let them learn the level, obstacles, and enemy design makes for an entertaining experience. The aforementioned art, sound, and animations aided in fostering the immersive environment that encourages a player to keep trying. Some of the most clever level design I've played in recent times.
If this development is continued on, I'd love to see a progression system of some sort and an overarching goal, but as a game jam entry, this ranks high everywhere (but especially fun and design). Do agree with the consensus about the void / jump button being the same, and how it curbed the difficulty of the later levels a little too far, but this is the stuff that's gleaned from putting a game out there. This one shined in so many places, however. Congratulations team on a diamond portfolio piece!
What a generous review! 😲 I agree that everyone came together with some really creative levels and im super happy with most of them. Balance, refinement and play testing is something that couldn't be fully realized in the jam timeframe unfortunately. The jump/void mechanic would probably be received a little better if the game had some more forgiveness built in. Im really glad you enjoyed the experience , thanks Ricky.
Thank you so much! We had so much fun making levels that we wouldn't have minded spending more time making even more. And we wanted to push the mechanics and synergy as much as we could within the selection of levels we were able to make. Glad you enjoyed it!
This was a lot of fun! My one bit of feedback is that tying the void button to the jump button resulted in a fair bit of frustration playing the game. Other than that, the game was really great! The art was fantastic, the music was fun, and the level design was interesting!
awesome!! i get the whole hop to void, but it gets really hard to hop when on a void platform.
Really great submission! I really like the main mechanic of the game and the art is great!
In regards to criticism, there were times when character felt a bit sluggish to control (though that may just be me coping with being unable to beat some of the levels -.-') and it felt like the character could use some sound effects when moving.
