I am late to the party here, but great job on this game!
Firstly, I have found the mechanics to work wonderfully -- I haven't found any bugs during my playtime. Finding the switches/pressure plates was satisfying, and the tension made it more rewarding.
As a horror enjoyer I may be biased, but I loved the feeling of tension throughout the levels, especially the last one with two geists!
The game does a good job on respecting its theme, and I was happy to see that dying would let me respawn on the same level with the same progress.
If I may suggest one thing, I would make the geists disappear for a short while after expelling them with CTRL, as in the last level I kinda got into a situation where the leftmost geist would get temporarily expelled, then it would simply wonder left by a couple of blocks, and then it was immediately ready to attack me again!
But this did not hinder the experience: since that was the last level, some challenge was expected.
Definitely great job on this one, I hope to see this idea get more expanded in the future! (7 deaths here)
Thank you for the feedback and thanks for playing! I could see the geists being stunned for a beat after running.
Great game! The combination of mechanics and art style is really unique and well-executed.
Thanks for playing!
Wow! i loved the vibe of this and the idea was so novel and interesting.
I thought the mechanics were a cool idea. I had some difficulty at first because i was standing on the fulcrum instead of next to it, but once i picked it up I was unstopable! 7 deaths at the end 💪. I thought the mechanics were well introduced bit by bit and the way they interacted was good and made for some engaging gameplay. Repelling the geists felt satisfying and winning a level felt good. I wish there were more levels, but thats a good sign because i obviously enjoyed it.
The art is lovely, the style is really fitting and everything works well together. The cutscenes were a great touch and it made the game feel super polished.
The soundeffects and music were well balanced. they added a thick layer of atmosphere to the game and gave a strong sense of forboding. It really fit well with the graphics and gameplay.
I liked that you provided options, its always nice to be able to tweak sfx and music and is much appreciated!
Thew only feedback I would have on improvement is to tighten up some of the hitboxes (or telegaph them more) and more content! its a really cool idea with loads of potential! great entry, well done!
Thank you playing and for giving me feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Hit boxes are definitely one of the things I fix. I think more types of haunters will help with both ramping up the challenge and adding variety.
It is a cool and complete game! I like the continuity of your art style. I could play more levels.
Thank you and thanks for playing.
This is pretty damn good, the progression of the game felt balanced. The art style, animations, sfx, and music all compliment each other incredibly well. And the games mechanics feel pretty intuitive.
Thank you and thanks for playing!
Great game! Love the cut scenes. You even add little touches like the ability to speed them up. Fantastic the way you teach us how to play while we play. Great retro looking graphics. Seriously impressed with how much you packed into this game and the timeframe you did it in. I hope you get to expand upon it.
Thanks for playing and for the feedback. Even if I don't make it to round 2, I'll likely keep working on it.
The idea is very novel, and I had fun playing!
Awesome, thanks for playing!
The artwork is definitely the star of this entry. It's so highly polished. No offence, but your cover image just doesn't do it justice. I don't know why you didn't add a bunch of screenshots (you can still do this post-submission).
The enemies were very aggressive, even in the first real level. As soon as I had repelled it, it raced back to kill off my character. It moves so fast and instantly kills you. Good thing the game restarts where you last were. Got to the end with 12 deaths.
Thanks for playing and thank you for your feedback.
Screenshots are a good idea and next time I'll spend time on the cover art.
I plan on making different kinds of haunters to help the player ramp up into the mechanics, some less aggressive ghosts to start with. For the geists, if you repel them and they don't have much room to run (<48 pixels) then they will attacked instead of being repelled because they don't like to be cornered.
The art is amazing. I love both the color palette and style. The mechanics are interesting and I think they could make for a very cool game. The enemy AI could be tweaked a little. I found that often it would run away to the same corner where I actually wanted to go. Also, sometimes the deflection didn’t quite work. Still had fun finding the hidden switches.
Thank you for playing and for the feedback.
If you repel the geist and the geist doesn't have much room to run, I.E.: cornered, it will attack instead of being deflected.
That makes sense; maybe some visual indicator would help. That thing would sometimes go through the walls/doors so I didn’t know it could get “cornered”.
Really inventive and fun game. I love how even though much of the art is as small and simple as old Gameboy sprites, you managed to make it a terrifying horror game with the mechanics, the excellent sound design, and of course, the big pay off of that beautiful, horrible death screen! Great job on this!
Awesome! Thanks for the feedback and for playing!
p.s. your game is still ringing in my head as it was super super cool and inventive. I hope you make more levels and expand upon it, I'd certainly buy/finish a game like this.
Oh nice. Thanks! I think even if I don't make it to the next round I'll still work on this game.
I enjoyed the game and I finished it with 10 deaths. The poltergeist jump scare is definitely effective. The game's mechanics work well together and I'm confident I could get less deaths now that I know how to get around the poltergeist better. I appreciate that the keys stay collected as it improves the sense of progression. In the room with the two books, I didn't realise that I had already expelled the first one and I was confused why it wasn't lighting up anymore but is only a minor thing. The ending is good and I liked the dialogue throughout
Thank you for the feedback and thanks for playing.
fun lil game! love the pixel art, it was a lil hard to understand but other than that great job!
Thanks for playing.
Great graphics! I had some issues trying to trigger the psychic power in the right place, and at one time when I was playing with WASD and Ctrl I ended up closing a bunch of browser tabs (Ctrl+W), so I switched to using the arrow keys after that.
Thanks for playing. Yeah, the Ctrl + W is not a great combo, I need to move the Psych button.
As always, art, sound, and polish are incredible. It took me a second to figure out how to play even with the instructions, but that might have just been a skill issue on my end haha. Great job!
Thanks for playing! I wanted to do more of a ramp up, but I didn't have time and I wanted to keep the play time down a bit so I put more priority on other tasks.
Cool SFX!
super nice and polished game! great work
Thanks for playing!
Yikes a jumpscare! 😱
Good work! Thanks for not resetting the level on death xD
Ha! Thanks for playing!
This is super fun :) I think that if this were a movie the twist at the end would be that we were dead the whole time... at least after the first 10 seconds... I died 23 times.
That would be a good leaderboard, most deaths by poltergeist :)
It kind of reminded me of zombies at my neighbors. I wish I had your skill with pixel art.
Thank you and thanks for playing! I planned to do a partner, the grandpa who's dead, who you switch between and can also walk through walls but can't affect the floor switches to add more to the story and puzzles. Also different kinds of haunters.
I hope you do! :)
I tried to play it a bit, but I just never play scary games, hate to be scared!
But yeah the art and music are nice and spot-on for those kinds of games.
Sorry for that, thanks for trying it out.
This game was great. I really enjoyed the mechanic that showed where the hidden levers and switches for the door was. I appreciated that the game kept doors and stuff open after getting killed, cuz I was getting wrecked in the first real level until I got a hang of everything. Great work on this it's really cool!
Thanks for playing. I planned to do some more ramp up levels, but had to scrap them for time. If I continue with it I'll probably make some other types of haunters that aren't as aggressive so I can introduce the mechanics for the player better. Thanks for the feedback.
This is an incredible prototype. The only problem I can even think of is that some of the areas are wonky. Otherwise, great job! 10/10
Thanks for playing!
